I have a toshiba laptop black screen, fan runs, lights in the front is on , what to do I'm not computer savvy

Laptop screen is black, fan runs, lights on in the front, power cord is good, not computer savvy, help me please.

Plug in an external monitor and if that works okay it's the screen itself that needs a new backlight and maybe a new inverter board too.
