I have an asus k501j laptop but it won't let me use my shift key to get my @ symbol up but just keeps giving me " or number

Make sure that Num Lock and Sym lock and any of the other oddball key locks on a laptop are not on. If the keyboard is actually broken we can't help you here, it would need hands-on repair.
