I have no output from my laptop to a monitor via VGA

Is there a way to re-boot or change settings in a HP windows laptop so that there is output from the VGA connector? It was working and now there is no signal. The monitor works with a netbook with the same cable.

If your using windows 7, hold the windows key + P to choose external monitor options. Most laptops will recognize the external VGA connection automatically and duplicate screen, some do not.
