i just bougth a home theatre set but cant get the connection to my television set right i cant get the sound playing through the woofer whilst playing a video game with an HDMI cable

If you are getting the woofer to play when you watch TV or a disc then I would suggest checking the audio menu in the game console and see if there is a setting that turns on the sub out through the HDMI.

no reason why the rear speakers work and the subwoofer doesnt.
does sound like a wrong setting.. or some broken hardware.

as long as the hdmi goes out of the receiver to the television, it should work.
cant always expect the device to output audio through the optical output AND the hdmi output at the same time.

too much (or perhaps two much) of the using an hdmi connection when the audio connection is connected differently.
