This isn't for me and I'm not all that familiar with cad, but i downloaded autocad 2018 and ran the cadalyst benchmark test on my desktop (6600k/1060 6gb/16gb ram) and it seems to breeze right through with no problems even with a dozen background programs running.

here's a picture of it, is this a good score? I can't find anything to compare it to...

Looking around i get a lot of conflicting opinions on whether you need a high end gpu or more ram for cad, and for a laptop the difference in money would be like $500-$1000 more.

I'm not really sure if that program is a good indication of how cad will perform, but it's the only thing i could find.

so can anyone suggest me some laptops (preferable under $1k), it won't be used for gaming at all.

For a CAD program, a balanced system is best, but you don't need a "gaming" video card to run it well.

On the other hand, you don't want a system with a slow one as complex models will be very slow to rotate. I'd lean towards 60% CPU/RAM and 40% video card.

This is pretty good http://www.xoticpc.com/asus-gl553vd-ds71.html, you are trading a solid state drive for a higher end CPU, you can get something else with less storage, a lower spec CPU but a faster hard drive. This is good, but you lose the IPS screen http://www.xoticpc.com/asus-m580vd-eb76.html

so a 7700HQ/16gb ram and a 1060 would be good? Or is a 1050/1050ti good enough?

this one is what i was thinking.

That Acer is fine, good price for a 1060. Only catch is that overall Acer quality is towards the bottom half of the laptops, but they are lower in price than most systems.
