I type a letter and I get another symbol

I am typing certain letters and I am getting other symbols. e,g. I hit i and I get a 0 and so on.

Turn off your numlock key. The numlock key is at the top of your laptop keyboard and it can be turned off by pressing it once, or pressing fn+numlock
