I updated to newest version of Java on my 64bit windows 7 ASUS but now cannot get Minecraft to work

I updated to the newest version of Java this morning and was advised to delete the 2 previous versions which I did. I tried to play Minecraft this evening and got the following error message:

Error: Could not create the Java Virtual Machine.
Error: A fatal exception has occurred. Program will exit.

I have been unable to find a solution so far.
Please help.
