For typical users, I agree with your assessment. The joy of android is variety. For users who don't want to put much thought into their devices (probably most users), something from Samsung is a great option. For someone who really wants the most out of their phone or just likes to tinker, OP is one of the few options anymore for an unlocked bootloader. For those that are interested, their phones have the potential to far outlast anything else simply because they aren't bound by the manufacturer's EOL.
