I would like to use my headset with a mic and a separate mic, can I do this!?!?

I would like to use my headset with a mic and a separate mic.I don't want to use the mic on the headset, I want to use the headphones on the headset and the separate mic. So I want to completely NOT use the mic on the head set. If I plug in the headset and the separate mic on my laptop will what I want to work, work?

Just set the separate mic as a default recording device (in Control Panel) and mute/disable the headset mic (also in Control Panel or headset's driver utility).
