i5 7300HQ + GTX 1060 6GB or i7 7700HQ + GTX1060 6GB

Hi guys,

I'm planning to buy either one of the following gaming laptop with the following specs below:

1) i5 7300HQ + GTX 1060 6GB + 8 RAM + 120hz IPS panel

2) i7 7700HQ + GTX 1060 6GB + 8 RAM + 60hz IPS panel

There is a price difference of $150 with the second option being more expensive. I am leaning more towards option (1) due to a slightly lower price and especially due to the 120hz IPS panel. However, I'm worried whether i5 7300HQ is powerful enough for gaming and bottleneck issues. If option (2) had an 120Hz IPS panel, I would have probably spent extra $$ to buy that laptop but the model that I've looked at it only comes with the 60Hz.

According to the Bottleneck calculator from http://thebottlenecker.com/#calculator it is estimating that the i5 7300HQ CPU might be a bit too weak for the 1060 6GB graphics card. I'm not too sure if this calculator is even accurate at all. What are your thoughts?

In terms of games, I play a broad range of games, however I play CS:GO the most. I don't really edit videos but sometimes I would need it for intensive programming such as writing and executing codes.

I would like to get your recommendation please.

Bottleneck calculator results:
Bottleneck detected: Your CPU is too weak for this graphic card.

Intel Core i5-7300HQ @ 2.50GHz with GeForce GTX 1060 (x1) will produce 12% of bottleneck. Everything over 10% is considered as bottleneck. We recommend you to replace Intel Core i5-7300HQ @ 2.50GHz with Intel Core i7-4820K @ 3.70GHz.

I've got the exact same problem in deciding between a higher refresh rate 120hz panel and i5-7300hq or an i7 with a 60hz panel that will be better in some games and overall give a better performance as well as being a more durable component for the future.

Why didnt they get that i7 on the 120hz screen laptop is still a mistery.
In my case the two laptops are these ones.

MSI GP62MVR 7RFX-1227XES Leopard Pro Intel Core i5-7300HQ/8GB/1TB/GTX1060/15.6"

Acer Predator Helios 300, 15.6'', Full HD, Intel® Core™ i7-7700HQ, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD + 128GB SSD, Nvidia GTX 1060

Btw, i dont care about one having SSD and the other one not, as i would add an SSD to the one that doesnt bring one, so no point in making that a decisiin factor.

What to compromise...

you are matching laptop i5 7300hq with desktop gtx1060. laptop version of gtx1060 is about 10% slower than desktop version so you are totally fine.
but even if they are a good pair, you will get cpu bottleneck if you are playing cpu jntensive games like cities skyline, and it is same the other way around.

for a gaming laptop i dont know if the 60hz screen matters... on the go maybe its a concern but the way i use mine its always hooked to an external screen or two, i dont do well using any computer with less than 3 monitors while gaming (too much to keep track of). id go i7 these days as the price difference is often pretty small, for example microcenter has a 7700hq/16gb ram/6gb 1060/nvme ssd 256/1tb hdd/dell for 899.99 on sale where as their i5 equivalent is 699.99 and it has a 1050 in it with a 128ssd so for the cost of the video and ssd upgrade you get the i7 for free basically

do not get the one with i5 7300hq because I have the one with gtx 1050 ti and when I play forza horizon 3 it bottlenecks and you don't want that so ill say spend a bit more and get the one with i7 because its a much stronger cpu and it wont cause and bottlenecks with the gtx 1060

In my 10+ Years recommending various laptops, Acer/HP are two brands I never recommend, having seen none of those who bought these go without issues within 1-2 years along with terrible after sales support.
