I7-3630QM vs i7-3610QM for gaming

The only difference between the two processors, is that the 3630 is 100Mhz faster than the 3610.

It is simply 2.3Ghz vs 2.4Ghz.
The 3630 being 2.4Ghz is only 4.2% faster.

As Azathoth pointed out, there's not much different between them. I doubt you'll notice and difference in gaming either.

Unless your CPU is bottle necking (which won't happen with either of those CPUs) theres going to be no difference in FPS, what you need to be looking at is the 'GPU' not the CPU.

Games will be limited by the graphics card. In games that are very dependent on the CPU that extra 100MHz might give you a 2% - 3% boost in performance.

Thanks! The reason I asked is becasue I am looking at the Lenovo Y580, and the cheaper model has I7-3630QM, but only 1366x768p, while the more expensive model has i7-3610QM with 1600x900p screen. Now I know which one the get. Thank you!

The higher the resolution the more dependent performance will be on the graphics card.

Yes, I would play games on 1366x768, but do everyday stuff on 1600x900 res.

Or, because I'd be mostly gaming on this, should I get the cheaper one with better processor at lower res? Also, does anybody know how well multi-tasking with Chrome+Word work at 1366x768 on a 15.6" screen?

As for your multi-tasking question, I'm currently using a Dell xps 14z with a 14" screen. I have no trouble multi-tasking. Grant it, I usually do the two window split screen feature in W7. But what is the root of your question? Are you leaning towards the idea that the screen is too small?

If you're wanting to game at a budget, I would recommend going with a high end i5. Usually laptops with the i5s are cheaper than the i7s, yet have similar performance because most games don't use HyperThreading.

If you're wanting to game at a budget, I would recommend going with a high end i5. Usually laptops with the i5s are cheaper than the i7s, yet have similar performance because most games don't use HyperThreading.

All games can use Hyper-Threading. They tend to not use it much on Intel's quad-core CPUs because they don't scale well across eight threads.

Mobile i5s are all dual-core models (they're basically just mobile i3s except with Turbo, more cache, and PCIe 3.0 support), so you do not want to get one of them. It'd be almost as bad as going from a desktop i5 to a desktop i3.
