if a phone was on a plan can u switch it to straight talk

I have a Samsung galaxy s4 and am wanten to switch it to straight talk. But I don't no if it is still tied up when we had it on a contract how do I find out if it will work. With straight talk

If you're still on a contract, then leaving your previous provider will require you to pay early termination fees.

I'm not sure if they would unlock your phone if you bought out of a contract like that.
