if I can link a monitor to my notebook

I've got a Compaq mini notebook with a broken screen the screen is all black so u can't see nothing so I tried to connect it to a monitor but it wouldn't work so is there a button I need to press or is it that I've done more than just screen damage and that's why it won't work. If any 1 can help I will be more than greatful thank you Mr jones

laptops usually have toggleable monitor key in fn+F5 or fn+F8 (it is usually shown as separate icon on F keys) which toggles output between: laptop only, cloned to external, external only.

What kind of connection does the laptop use to connect the monitor? Just a VGA input? Usually when you connect a monitor to a laptop, it will switch to the monitor automatically. If you cannot get it to swap to the monitor with Fn keys as mentioned before... Then there may be a bigger issue with it.

If you tell us what laptop model you have, specifically, we might be able to better help. Most laptops have hotkeys that toggle between internal and external displays, but the keys differ between laptop models.
