The type of back pain is important to mention. I have disc degeneration and arthritis in my lower back (L3, 4 & 5) which causes pressure on the nerves. No firm mattress has ever felt comfortable, or is the only solution. To keep my spine aligned, I bought a hybrid, medium mattress with two large pillows. I sleep on my side, with the pillows on either side to throw my leg over. My hip sinks into the memory foam, the pillow supports my leg to keep my hips aligned.
