Mostly research (running matlab codes, statistical softwares, working with ArcGIS) and every once in a while playing video games.

Surfing the web, playing music, watching movies, usual things.

I wouldn't mind a laptop where I can also play some video games, I'm not a huge gamer, (for example I played GTA:SA on a 12" laptop after 2 years it was released, and the graphic quality wasn't superb but it was fine).

Will you be doing GPGPU computing? If so, I think a Sager NP8660 is good here, or a NP5793 if you're fine with the 17" screen, which I would recommend - the screen area is unbeatable for work. I can't stand using applications and not being able to view them all at the same time.
