I'm thinking about getting a surface rt or a surface 2 and I'm just wondering if I will be able to install software on it similar to a computer - for example chrome.
The main piece of software I would want to install on it would be visual studio for my programming and also the office suite for college work (which comes with it I think anyway).

I believe the Surface 2 is coming with Office RT (the rubbish version), and the normal Surface RT is getting (or has already had) Office RT delivered.

But the answer is no, it won't work. The Surface RT tablets do not use standard x86 architecture, so you can't run normal programs as you would in a normal Windows environment.

Right there, you're looking at a very expensive Surface Pro tablet, which are stupid, underpowered and pointless, especially for your needs. I'd say get a decent laptop instead of a tablet, especially if you're going to be programming (You do not want to be programming on that cover keyboard either, it'll be hell on toast).
