Is there a chance for me to install a non laptop fan on my laptop motherboard with an rPGA989 socket?? core i5, model Lenovo Z580

Not really. DIfferent fans may require different voltages, connectors, have different air moving capacity, etc. Why would you want to do this?

The plan is to turn the obsolete laptop into a light weight desktop, since the cpu dies are exposed, I figured I'd get good cooling if I installed a desktop oriented one. Could I do it if I figure out an independent power supply for the fan?

Assuming you are talking about cooling the CPU (and possibly GPU), a laptop motherboard is going to lack the mounting holes to mount the heatsink like those found on a desktop motherboard.

There really isn't much feasibility to your plan. Sorry.
