Im currently using a cheap 2.1 creative speaker system that connected through the back of the pc. audio is sufficient, but I want a bit better.

Got a denon receiver from my brother. how do I connect this to my pc?

I had a klipsch promedia 4.1 pc speaker set but the amp/sub passed out and the subwoofers surround deteriorated. so no sub amp unit and just the sats.

anyways, Id like to connect the 4 satellites to the receiver. spoke to klipsch and was told they can handle 40 watts and they are 6 ohms. I think the denon can put out more than the speaker can handle, so my question is:

does a receiver give a speaker the amount of watts according to how much I turn the volume up or is it the full amount of watts all the time?

I never turned the volume up much when I was using them with the klipsch amp/sub unit so 40 watts is a huge amount for me. I dont want to burn them.

thank you.

above link is to the back of the receiver.

Your correct on both accounts. The optical out is what you would want to use so that the signal is clean and not processed by the crappy DAC of your sound card. Not really anything to setup per se other than the physical connection which you described correctly. Just have to make sure your PC is outputting to the optical out which will generally show up in windows as spdif.

Your thinking is correct. As you turn up the volume the amplifier in the Denon receiver will be providing more wattage / amps to the speakers. If you keep the volume low it will be fine. Just be carful because as you already know if you were to have the volume turned all the way up its pretty likely you will damage the speakers.

nice! so basically keep it lowish and ill be fine. can you look at the image and tell me whats the best way to connect it to my pc please?

can I use any of the "digital" connections on the receiver? I think my motherboard has that squarish "optical out" connector thats on the receiver (its between the keyboard mouse to USB connection on the back. or should I just use the regular RCA connection and be done with it?

thank you.
