intermittent suround speaker function on pc

i have searched for a long time to resolve this issue and found nothing to help yet. sometimes my surround speakers produce audio and sometimes they do not.
I am using a gtx770 asus directcu II with HDMI connection to an onkyo NR808 receiver then hdmi connection to a mitsubishi tv with audio disabled on the tv. if i turn on the computer and surround sound works, it continues working for the duration the computer is on (i have not tried to see if restarting will stop the surround from working)
I have spent time in the windows playback device section and set it up for 7.1 surround. When the surround does not function, I can hear the surround speakers faintly from the front left speaker when testing in the configuration menu
If anyone has any insight to this or has experienced it before, I would really appreciate some help

I have this problem when running audio from my PC to my Mackie PROFX8 mixer then to my surround sound unit. It just means you cant run the audio type.
