Nothing like an artificial limit on supplies to try and pump up demand and give the illusion of high popularity. Classic Apple tactic.

"Here's a quick refresh on how much the iPad will cost:

Too much.

"

yet more proof that there are too many idiots in the world.

they have been making infinitely more useful tablets for years! and you know what? people STILL didn't want them!! where's that picture of the BMW badge in a pile of crap? I could use that bout now: "you suckers would buy anything"

Have you ever considered that hardware is only a small part of the story?

The reason why the iPad will outsell other tablets is the user experience and quality.

You can stuff a desktop i7 in a tablet and if it still runs Windows 7, nobody will buy it.

Except the entire UMPC community... assuming it has decent battery life.

Sorry, UMPCs ARE popular, albeit not so much here in the U.S. They are a niche market, kind of like PC gamers...

I cannot wait to see this over sized iPod touch fail. What a dumb idea and with no multi tasking or flash, what the hell is that? The thing about the iPod Touch, and iPhone, that people like so much is you can do a lot with one little device that looks nice and fits into your pocket. The iPad clearly does not fit into your pocket and offers no more than an iPod, other than a larger screen. It's just an oversized PDA and in the PDA business oversized is not a good thing.

Seriously, they just scaled the entire iPhone up. All I can think when I see the thing is Bezel-City.

PC gamers are a niche market? Well, you certainly have a niche opinion.

Since these always turn into Apple bashing and what idiot would buy one...I haven't decided if I will buy one, but for what I want it would be perfect. I read A LOT of technical schematics (real electrical engineering schematics for micro chips, etc.). PDAs are far too small to display a complex chip schematic PDF. I already have a laptop and because I am an Engineer; I need a powerful laptop and at least 1680x1050 screen res. Buying a UMPC would be an option, however they are much thicker (on average double the thickness) than the iPad. Plus, why would I want to carry around that extra pound or so if I don't need to? I already have the lightest 17inch laptop on the market. The price is definitely high, but if you don't make a decent salary maybe this device isn't targeted for you. I don't need to do anything else except view PDFs. Sony has some readers (~$300) that are nice, but aren't color and don't do much more than that. At least the iPad can surf web, download tons of apps, books, movies, etc. I have been looking for a device that is super thin with about a 10 inch screen. The iPad is definitely a niche product, but why degrade people or a product because you don't need it?

@eeide
If you want a light 10 inch screen, why did you buy a 17 inch laptop? No matter what a 17 inch laptop is going to have some weight to it and would not be far to compare it to a 10 inch iPad. Also, the pdf viewer on an iPod touch is not that great and I can only expect the same with the iPad. I'm not trying to bash Apple on this, I mean I do own an iPhone, but I just don't get the logic here. I can get a very small tablet that can do a lot more for less. It may be just a bit heaver, but it will give me multi tasking, flash and expandability (a must in the IT world). I can also go to the store and buy software for a tablet or laptop, which is something you cannot do on an oversized iPod. It has to be "approved" by Apple.

Have you looked at any of the competing devices? For example, I think the available now Asus T91MT (an improved touch screen version of their tablet netbook) or the soon to be released T101MT might fit the bill a little better. Same price, fully functional multi-tasking real tablet PC... not some iTouch device dubbed a "tablet" only because of its form-factor.

It is a shame that this device and its knock-offs will probably be wild successes (Apple has become a marketing god, perfecting selling "cool" in somewhat limited and locked down devices), leading to the crippling of real tablets. My primary example is Window Phone 7 - now with limited multi-tasking and limited copy-and-paste functionality thanks to Microsoft copying Apple's product line. No, I will not buy an iPhone and now I will not buy a WP7 phone. Nor will I buy an iPad, but I will be getting a T101MT (which they locked up the stupid battery inside like Apple devices... but I always use a Tekkeon MP3450 for extra power rather than buy a second battery - more universal for the same price).
