Question iPhone XR not reading texts in 2019 Kia Sorento

Previous phone (Microsoft Windows 10 Lumia 950) would read texts as they came in and give me options to read and reply as needed (in both my 2019 Kia Sorento and 2015 Nissan Rogue). New XR won't do this. I can connect using CarPlay and a charging cable, but this is nuts. I shouldn't have to tether my phone to the car every time I get in. It should work through Bluetooth, just like the Lumia 950.
Any thoughts? Am I missing something? Is there an app out there that could make this work? Is there a workaround?

OK, according to Kia Customer Service, the new radio in the 2019 Sorento does not allow text reading without the cable and CarPay (Apple) or Android Auto.
Not sure which genius figured out this "update", but I'd really like to have a chat with him/her.
This doesn't make sense - it's a step backward. They had it right, but now have to move in reverse.
Not a happy camper.
Thanks to all who followed this, hopefully someone at Kia will wake up one of these days and send out another "update"...
