Hi!
I saw it somewhere that Asus rog GL55 models using IPS technology nowadays.

I bought an Asus GL552vw a couple of days ago but I couldn't find out if it has IPS panel or not.

Description only says it's a FHD LED backlit screen.
No TN or IPS stated.

My question is:
Does all the Asus GL552vw models come with IPS panel or are they TN?

I asking it because it doesn't seem to me like an IPS. They told me in the store that it's an IPS model but the screen is just so "inconsistent".
The contrast ratio seems bad to me and the viewing angels also seem less than 178°.
Especially compared to my IPS screen smartphone.
Idk, perhaps I am just being stupid but I think they lied to me and it's not an IPS.
Please help, I tried to google it but I couldn't find it out.

Solution

Sorry, but I'm no help with those models...

No, not that simple. There are various models of GL552VW. The panels vary from 720p to 1080p. Some 1080p models are IPS, some are not.

I just spent what feels like an hour researching that specific model, and can't seem to find a definitive answer to your question. Very frustrating!!

Yes, I know. I did the same.

I tried to find the exact model and it's exact specifications but I couldn't find anything about the screen. 🙁

This place is my last hope to get an answer.

Thanks doing research BTW, I appreciate it.

You're welcome, although I was no help in the end. 🙁

Are the viewing angles more limited when turning the laptop side-to-side, or when you tilt the display forward and back at different angles?

This makes me think your panel is TN, not IPS. One of the professional reviews I read of the GL552VW (no clue which specific one) made mention that the panel was TN, and the vertical viewing angles were poor because of it. Still not a definitive answer, though.

Yes, that was my suspicion too.

I am thinking about returning it to the store and changing it to something else with an IPS screen.

Do you know anything about this one:

Is that an IPS model? Unfortunately, the description doesn't say it.

Or maybe this one:

It seems the same but its a little bit different.
Too bad they don't write the exact modellnber in the description so perhaps it's the same. Except the processor.

Sorry, but I'm no help with those models.

I have 2 laptops sitting in front of me at the moment. The one in my sig, and an HP Pavilion. Both have full HD matte displays. The MSI has a TN panel, and the HP has an IPS panel (and is at least a year newer). In every aspect except viewing angles, the TN panel in my MSI is superior to the IPS panel in the HP.

Just my personal opinion (yours may differ), but viewing angle is pretty far down my list of things I'm concerned about. I'm fussier about things like black level, contrast, color accuracy, etc.

Only you can decide for yourself if you are satisfied with a particular display or not. I wouldn't settle if I wasn't. I did that with a laptop I purchased a couple years back. It was an ASUS ROG G75. Great laptop, but the display to me seemed less than spectacular. Thought I'd get used to it eventually, but no such luck. A year later I purchased a different panel for it and swapped it out myself.

So yeah, if you're disappointed with the display, definitely take it back and try another model or even brand.
