Is it possible, crossover cable to computer with cable mod..

I have a broadband cable modem hooked to my computer. Is it possible
for me to install another network card, and use a crossover cable from
the new network card to the replaytv? I want this to be my means of
updating the replaytv, plus transfer files via DVarchive.

Any advantages/disadvatages to doing this method as opposed to buying a
router and hooking the cable modem to the router, then splitting to the
computer and replaytv? If the crossover cable will do this same, then
I can save money and not buy a router.
Please give me any suggestions/thoughts. Thanks.

I would just buy a router, they are $40 or so.
Simplify your life whenever possible. You will thank yourself later.

Yeah - a cheap home gateway will generally still have a firewall and
DHCP server, and it consumes a hell of a lot less power than a PC. It
is also easier to setup then sticking another NIC in the PC and then
setting up connection sharing in Windows.

Even a home gateway with built in 11g support and more features runs
around $100.

Bought one a few weeks ago (Netgear MR614 with 11g) for $19.99 after
rebate. Not much more than a NIC!

If I use wireless, wont transfer speeds be considerably lower than a
wired setup?
Also, what will hook up to the Replaytv if I use a wireless router?

They will. This can keep streaming from working. Use a (much simpler)
wired network if possible.

Possible yes, but given that configuration I think I'd spend a few
dollars more and install a router, A 2nd LAN card (NIC) will run you 10
to 20 bucks, When on sale a low end D-link or Linksys router will run
you 20-40 bucks, Not that much different, and my DWL-650 is wireless, So
it runs the laptop no matter where in the house I am as well as two
desktops (Well mini-towers) and the Replay. Laptop wired if it's in
it's DOC, wireless when undocked.

Yes.

To use wireless you'd have to get a Wired-to-WiFi bridge to connect to
the RTV's wired Ethernet port.

While wireless will work using a bridge (typically a $70 item) at the
RTV end, a wired connection is far better. My point was that the
wireless router, which includes wired ports as well, is almost as cheap
as a NIC now. You may not need the wireless at all or you could use it
for your laptop or security cameras.
At my other home I had to use wireless to reach the RTV as there were
no practical options for running cable. It does do daily updates and
show sharing but I haven't tried tried any streaming.

It may or may not work. Wireless links are often slower than what
streaming requires. The stated speed drops off quickly with distance
(wireless link) and wireless has higher overhead. There should be more
chance of streaming working with "g" wireless.
