It might depend on the particular model. I think on the 7 they've done something with the Home sensor so that, unless it's installed by Apple repair techs, it disables the fingerprint sensor portion, but I don't know about the older models.

Funny you bring this up, though, as Techspot just posted a story today about an engineer who bought the parts to make his own iPhone 6 from the Chinese suppliers (http/www.techspot.com/news/68950-engineer-builds-iphone-6s-using-spare-parts-bought.html)...
