a friend gave me his samsung captivate.
I use it as a media player but Im thinking about activating it.
Is this relatively safe?

Any serious issues?

According to the statistics, there is still about 10% of all Android devices running Gingerbread.

I just retired a Samsung Captivate earlier this year to upgrade to a S5. I would be worried that you will eventually no longer be able to access Google Play. The single core CPU in the Capitvate is pretty slow. Run a security suite like Lookout, don't load apps from anywhere besides Google Play, use basic common sense.
