hi, my onboard sound card died and am now putting in my (logitech x230) speakers into the headphone output, they still sound great, the question is , do i really need to buy a new sound card?, will there be any boost in performance?

Unless you mean that you are running your speakers off the CD/DVD drive headphone socket, presumably you are still using the motherboard's own sound circuitry. Usually these are inferior to a high quality separate sound card but I use mine for convenience.

Musician friends use external USB (I think) or Firewire (maybe) connected sound boxes because they aren't drowned in noise like internal cards or m/board circuitry.

So if you're happy and don't plan to do serious input work (like converting vinyl LP tracks to WAV or MP3 files) I'd stick with what you've got and save.
