Is there a different way to charge a laptop battery without using the charger port?

I have an old hp Compaq laptop, and I let someone use it and when I got it back, my charger port was not lighting up to signal a charge is going through. My question is, is there a different way to charge my laptop battery without using an ac adapter...

In some cases, the laptop battery can be charged external to the laptop.

In your case, the problem is most likely that they left the notebook plugged in too long, and killed the battery somehow. I would look into a new battery if you still want to use the laptop. There are some 3rd party batteries that are a lot more affordable.
