that will play some games well at 720p maybe not demanding games such as crysis or Battlefield 4/hardline but at that lower resolution I expect it will run some/most games at least medium-high.

The graphics card is very underwhelming and the cpu has decent single core performance, but is only duo-core. I wouldn't say it's particularly good for what you want it to do.

your right about the graphics card but laptop cpu's are typically dual cores unless you buy a very high end I7 in a $1500 laptop or more. That is decent for a laptop cpu

You can get quadcore i7 laptop cpu's in systems for $900 if you know how to shop and look around. And just because it is decent for a laptop cpu doesn't mean it's good for gaming. Laptop CPU's tend to be far behind in power to their desktop counterparts. It's like saying a snail is very fast because it is pretty quick for a snail.

take a look at this https://www.cyberpowerpc.com/system/FANGBOOK_III_HX6-100_Gaming_Laptop 850 dollars (slightly over budget) you could go for an i5 to suit your budget. i don't necessarily reccomend this exact laptop, just to show you that there are laptops in your price range that will most games at max. but pjgmaster was right about building a desktop, even getting a pre build would be better.
edit: or these http://www.xoticpc.com/force-msi-1492-31028-850m-msi-ge40-barebones-p-7082.html?wconfigure=yes / http://www.xoticpc.com/force-16gc-29029-860m-msi-ge60-apachepro-barebones-p-7173.html?wconfigure=yes

To answer you question if is ok for mid range gaming. It will be able to handle most games at 720p but not on ultra for the newer games.
As for if it is better to buy a desktop or laptop for gaming, a desktop is always better and worth your money as it is not only faster but more upgradable in the future.
