Laptop bAttery replacement

What would happen if I would change my laptop. Battery 11.7v 4700mah I believe to 11.7 v but 1000mah? Would the laptop still work or no?

It should still work, but runtime on battery would be severely reduced. The "mah" is the capacity of the battery. I'd recommend finding a battery the same or higher capacity instead of using that battery, if you can.
