Laptop Blank Screen

Recently my laptop will not boot properly. Upon booting I see the welcome screen from windows 7 then all I have is a blank screen with a cursor. I was able to boot into safe mode and run virus scans but nothing was found. Previous to having this boot issue my laptop was running slowly. It would boot up, run VERY slowly for a few minutes, then completely freeze. The mouse wouldn't move and ctrl-alt-del wouldn't either. Please help. Thanks.

I would start by testing some of your hardware, try memtest for your RAM and spinrite to check your harddrive. I would also try running from a cd op system such as ubuntu.
This will at least tick some boxes in trying to identify the issue

ok now I am (somehow) back to the freezing. The laptop boots normally and the mouse moves but I can't actually click or do anything.
