laptop busted screen weird issue with external monitor..

I busted my laptop screen awhile ago and I recently tried to hook it up to an external monitor that works, its the one I use with my desktop. I hook it up and close the lid of the laptop on boot and it goes to the monitor and the monitor pulls the video but is not working, the top of the screen is black and the bottom is like strange colors of purple and black. its not even like a video feed its just some random image that does not change. I don't know if the laptop boots completely either. I put a hd in it with windows but i cant even tell if it boots all the way.

Would it be worth buying a new screen for it or what?

if it doesnt display properly to an external monitor chances are replacing the screen may not fix it

if it was dropped something else may be damaged

I checked the mobo and the processor, and they both seem to be fine, It was never dropped so I'm unsure as to what the issue may be
