Laptop HDD issue

Ok so my problem is that the original OLD hdd of 500gb from the laptop is almost dead, constantly on 100% disk usage issues (i tried EVERYTHING on windows 10 and windows 8.1), and finally windows 10 told me that drive is dying.

Whatever the case I have tried it all and the laptop won't run any faster at all.

Ok so now I tried using the HDD from an old laptop (250gb), which I was using as external storage.

First I format it to its predefined values, and then tried to put it on the laptop, but the laptop doesn't do anything, just sits there with a "_" blinking and if i try to spam F12 (for bios) it just beeps every time i press any button.

Basically I can not even go into bios if I put that hdd, but it works "fine" with the "broken" HDD.

Any advice? I assume I would need a new hdd but before that I kinnda want to know if anything else isn't broken..

EDIT: solved by going into bios (with the "broken" hdd installed), and change controlling driver from AHCI to Compatability (IDE).

Thank you in advice.

At what point are you hitting the F12 key to get to BIOS? Soon as you turn it on? Don't over-do it or the keyboard buffer will fill and you will get that beeping when hitting the key. If the drive worked as an external it should work with the system also, but you would to install Windows on it first.

Maybe check the drive with another laptop if you can to see if another one boots with that drive connected.

If I don't press any button it just stays in the blank screen with the "_" clipping on the upper left corner forever, and I tried to install windows on the drive but the bastard doesn't work through USB for some reason, won't install in that at all...

Only thing left is to remove one of my tower HDD's, put it in there and install it there and then try to put it on the laptop and see if it at least lets me into BIOS then... Not sure if this could cause any errors by replacing drives on my tower pc... I don't see anything but if you think anything might happen let me know.

I just can't wrap my head around why it won't even go into BIOS with or without a HDD...and what the hell does that HDD have that the laptop acts so damn strange ...

You can't install Windows on an external drive, that is why it failed that way.

If you install Windows on another system, it very likely won't boot on the laptop, will go into a reboot loop or crash with a bluescreen.

Did you try booting off a Windows setup media with the drive installed? If you just do nothing it will try to boot off that hard drive and fail since it was not setup. That blinking cursor is a sign that the system can't find the boot partition on the hard drive.

I fixed it by using the old HDD>get into bios and change the driver from AHCI to "compatibility" which was IDE, I forgot how old the other HDD actually was...

All good now, laptop runs as intended, still gonna probably need a new one, but its my parents laptop, they don't use it for much anyway.

Thanks for the help.
