Hello there,

Have a Sony Vaio, not all that new but, until last week, showing no obvious signs of ageing. While trying to boot, got the Operating System Not Found message. Went into Bios, and while not exactly knowing what I was doing, seemed to stumble into a solution.

However, it has on several occasions, just shut down without warning, with a message, Windows has detected a problem and is closing down to avoid damage, flashing up. Then the Operating System Not Found returns. I don't know if there is a deeper problem here or what is going on. At the same time, have an issue with lots of pop-up ads and AVG detecting a high number of threats, so maybe have picked up a virus which is causing this or adding to it.

Any advice or help greatly appreciated, thanks, John

The issue could be malware related, I'll suggest following this guide (provided you can get into the OS) http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/8263-63-simple-free-guide-removing-malware

If still having issues after going through the guide, I'll suggest running SeaTools http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/seatools/ to check the health of your hard drive - if unable to get into the OS, use Seatools for DOS which runs independent of an OS

Just to say thanks again for your help. Was any amount of dirt and rubbish to be cleaned up there, hopefully I have a clean bill of health going forward.

I would like to run the seatools option also. Just one last silly question - do I just have to load a blank cd into the cd rom machine and let the program run?
