Laptop monitor went haywire

Last night my brother booted up his laptop and right away the screen showed up like this. Does anyone have an idea as to what the cause may be?

Looks like a bad screen - has the laptop been dropped?

Just to make sure it isn't a graphics card issue, connect it to a PC monitor and press the FN key in conjunction with whichever of the Function keys have the screen icon on it.

the screen is broken as point of impact is at the bottom center. what is the make & model# of the laptop?
