Laptop only boots after repeatedly switch ram every time I turn it on

My 4 year old Sony Vaio laptop only boots after repeatedly switching the ram I added and extra 2g of Kingston ram to the old ram.if I don't switch the ram it make a normal on noice but then dies out after like a second.when the ram works it shows up and works fine.please suggest

Hello... Memory configurations/communications get stored in your CMOS... and any Hardware changes to the MB will need a CMOS clear to create new CMOS data for the hardware change. A small battery on the MB holds/stores the data in the CMOS chip.

Sometimes accessing the battery for removal and accessing the CMOS reset/clear pins in a LAPtop is not easy B /

Are you using a mis-matched/size/brand/spec of of Ram sticks?
