Powered up my laptop in the morning after it was working fine the previous night, screen remained black after pressing power button, despite backlit keyboard and all indicator lights working.

So plugged into my monitor via HDMI and the Laptop is working fine. Check display drivers all working properly.

Laptop under 3 months old.

Could it be the cable connecting screen to the motherboard has slipped out?

Solution
Those ribbon cables can't just slip out; it's hard to release them sometimes. It's more likely the screen has failed so remove all the personal files you have in there before taking it back to the retailer.

As much as threatening it with a screwdriver will invalidate the warranty and if they replace it, there's no guessing where all your personal date will end up so that removal of data is crucial. Revert it to Factory settings if you can.
