Laptop screen broken, safe mode won't display over HDMI!

Basically, my laptop screen is broken so I'm using it through HDMI on my tv, it works fine. Most of the time.

But now I have a major problem, my main user account (administrator) is showing the message 'cannot load user profile'.

I know how to fix this in safe mode and I can figure out how to access safe mode as my laptop screen goes grey in the corner when I start up and tap F8 then tap down once and press enter starts safe mode.

BUT...

...Safe mode doesn't seem to work through HDMI!

Is there any way I can get safe mode up through HDMI?

Does the monitor select function key combo have any effect? (ie - pressing Fn and F4 at the same time cycles my displays thru the various options)
