laptop shut off on its own

i have a acer aspire. computer just turned itself off on its own i have tried all methods pulling battery held start button down, put battery in turned on it flashes 5 times & then goes out .but on power side it does nothing no lights at all. any idea on what has happened.

One possible explanation is your laptop might have overheated and shuts itself off. Sometimes the motherboard could be affected when this things happen. Try to reseat the RAM as well, take it off from the laptop then put them back in making sure it's seated properly into each slots. Next is to try another AC adapter, you mentioned that you don't see any lights on the laptop could be that it's not getting enough power from the AC adapter. If all these failed to resolve the issue you may need to contact the manufacturer for them to have it repaired if it's still under the factory warranty.
