Hi all,
I have been facing this problem of laptop goes off instantly for a week now. I have Dell/Inspiron laptop and Fedora13 on it. The battery is in its second half of life and gives 30 mins of backup. The problem occurs however when I try to change the orientation of the laptop screen or put it from the lap to a table, all of a sudden it just goes off, like someone has removed the power supply. For the records my laptop always runs on AC power so even if battery is misbehaving the power should have come from AC.

sounds like a dead battery and a broken power plug on the mb.check to see if there any play on the power plug with the ac adaptor off. there should be little to none. also check the tip of the adaptor to see that the rubber o-ring not missing or cut and causing the laptop ac brick to short out. the last is a broken wire in the brick or tip. I would look on ebay for a cheap new brick to rule out a bad wire in the brick. if it the pin on the mb..some people can soilder it back on..some mb it a replaceable part. you dont want it to short out and take the mb with it.

Forgot to mention the problem is intermittent and it works pretty well most of the time and also when I try to reproduce it by simulating it. It only happens once in a day or two. Also the battery provides back up for about half an hour as well without any problem.
