I hate a slow computer! Mine takes too long to start up, too long to open programs, and too long to switch between browser tabs. I currently have a 1.9 GHz duo core Dell with a 109 Gb 5400 rpm hard drive and 2 Gb RAM. I would like to know if I should get another duo core of if I need to go to a quad core. Also how much cache do it need?

1. What is your budget? Under $1000

2. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering? 15.6” or bigger

3. What screen resolution do you want? Doesn’t matter

4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop? Desktop replacement, but take it with me on vacation, etc.

5. How much battery life do you need? At least an hour

6. Do you want to play games on your laptop? No

7. What other tasks do you want t o do with your laptop? Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Word, Excel all open at the same time, several (up to 5) Word & Excel files open at a time); Internet (usually Chrome (sometimes as many as 20 tabs) & Internet Explorer (usually 1 or 2 tabs) open; Windows Live Messenger (sometimes 2 or 3 conversations going on at once)

8. How much storage (Hard Drive capacity) do you need? at least 350 GB

9. If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post their links. Just looking for a good deal

10. How long do you want to keep your laptop? 2 or 3 years

11. What kind of optical drive do you need? DVD burner

12. Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don’t like and explain the reasons. I have only owned Dells, but am open to anything except a Mac. It would be too expensive to replace all my software if I switched to a Mac.

13. What country do you live in? US

14. Please tell us any additional information if needed. I need to run the applications as stated in number 7 as quickly and efficiently as possible. Do I need a quad core or do the programs I use even take advantage of a quad core? I’m thinking the faster the better, 7200 rpm hard drive and at least 4 Gb RAM (If it doesn’t come with 8 Gb RAM I will upgrade it to 8 Gb in a couple of months.) What about cache? How much of that do I need for what I do?

Thanks for your help!

If you've used nothing but a 5400 rpm hdd then yes, you will notice a difference since I have a laptop with a 5400 rpm hdd and a desktop with two 7200 rpm hdd's. I actually have a laptop slightly worst than yours, mine is a Inspiron E1505 with a 250 GB hdd (the old 35GB one finally gave out after 5 years), 2 GB of RAM, and 1.66 intel Core Duo processor.

I've had to personally reformat my laptop twice after a virus caused a registry corruption and then a hard drive failure. Have you tried to optimize your laptop at all to run as fast as you can make it?

You can't compare laptops and desktops... There are variables that change the experienced speed...

That offer is no longer valid.. What is up with all the dealstudio recommendations? Every one I've seen so far have either had broken links, expired offers, or out of stock xD

Thanks for everyone's suggestions. I ended up buying a 17.3" Dell XPS from Dell Outlet. It has the i7 2630QM processor, 6 MB cache, 8 GB RAM, and two 500 GB 7200 rpm hard drives for $869 plus tax with free shipping.
