Question Laptop totally dead, although power still gets through

Yesterday, my Toshiba Satellite L50-C-244 died suddenly whilst in use.

It seemed to go to sleep (power button flashing slowly) but would not wake up. I tried the standard hard reset: unplugged mains charger, removed battery, held down the power button for a minute before reconnecting the charger. It still fails to switch on, and the power button will now not light up at all. Nor do the mains or battery LEDs illuminate.

However, my periperal mouse still lights up when connected to a USB port -- and I can still charge my phone from the laptop by USB! I have opened the chassis and tested various points with a multimeter: the charger is still outputting its full 19V, 5V is still present at the power switch assembly and the little LED board. I can see nothing obviously burnt or blown. The CMOS battery (rated at 3V) was only producing 2.1V, so I replaced it; no improvement.

Can anyone please suggest what else the problem might be?

I have owned this laptop almost 4 1/2 years, so its warranty is long expired; however, if it can be repaired, I would vastly prefer that to buying a new one.
