Laptop Turns ON. Got Black Screen but all other light's are on. no BOOT but laptop is working like mad.

I have an HP pavilion dv7 laptop that will not boot.
When plugged with the adaptor the charging light comes on and when I press the power buttton all the small lights turn on but the screen remains black. The fans and everything else seems to go on.
Then the computer just works like mad, calms down for a bit then works like mad. All along with a black screen and lights on. The computer doesn't stop doing this until I pull out the power adapter or with a forced stop.

I gave it in to a repair shop and they said it was the power adapter but they couldn't get the part, hp doesn't make them anymore they said.
I opened the computer up to look at the power adapter and could see there was a cable loose. I soldered it as instructions from the internet told me and it just does the same thing.

I have found the power adapter for my computer on eBay, but before I buy it....

Is there anyway for me to know it's the power adapter?
Sounds weird to me that the whole computer lights up (not screen) and the harddisk is spinning and they say it's the power adapter. I've read a lot about people with similar problems but then its the motherboard that's the problem.
I don't want to spend money on the wrong parts.

That would have nothing to do with the charger. Wow, sad that they would say that. An adapter would have nothing to do with the display. If the device turns on (lights, sounds from inside, etc.) and only the display isn't showing then you can try the following to see about resolving it, but there is like no way it could be the other.

Try this...

1. Turn the laptop off (not sleep or hibernate but off).
2. Connect an external monitor to the laptop.
3. Turn on the external monitor.
4. Turn on the laptop.

NOTE: You may have to press an "external monitor" button. Could be the f4 button or a button with two monitors on it, for the external monitor to work.

If you can see fine on the external monitor, then your attached display, or the ribbon cable that connects it, are your problem.

If you can't see on the external monitor at all, or the problem occurs on the external monitor as well, then it is probably the graphics card/GPU that is the problem, which may require the motherboard be replaced.
