Laptop TV connection

I just got a new computer and this one will not connect with my tv. I tried a new HDMI cord but all i see for a connection is my sound option on my laptop has been changed to PanasonicTVO; . There is no actual sound from anywhere but the tv, and wherever i search on my laptop theres nothing found between the two. What is the problem, and how do i fix it?

Are you connecting the laptop directly to the TV or to something else? and are you using a surround sound system or only the TV for sound?
