Sounds like your onboard chipset/GPU has failed, meaning you will need a replacement laptop motherboard. I've had a few HP/Compaqs and Toshibas fail this way over the last couple of months, depending on how old the laptop is it might not be worth the repair costs (refurbished motherboard could cost around £90/$160 + labor).

Thank you....after pushing the power button repeatedly my laptop has again started...I think I will just leave it on....sometimes it will start right away but like this am it took quite a few tries...still think it could be the problem you stated??
