Laptop won't start, even when plugged in.

My friend gave me his laptop to fix. He just told me it wouldn't start. Even when it is plugged straight into the wall, nothing happens when I hit the power button(no LEDs, no fans, nothing.) now I had the battery checked out and it is dead. But I'm wondering if replacing the battery would fix the problem or if its a possible motherboard problem. The laptop is relatively new also.

It's a Sony Vaio VPCS131FM laptop.

REMOVE battery , then plug charger back in... does it work now ?

I have done that and still no luck :/
