For some reason whenever I try and launch games on my HP dv6 the laptops display turns off about 30-90 seconds after opening the game. My computer gets fine fps in the short amount of time I can play it, and I'm pretty sure it's to do with the temperature. I've tried using an external monitor but the same goes.
Any help would be great. Cheers

sounds like the infamous hp graphics chip solder issue

i remember think it was the dv2 series people using heat guns baking the motherboard etc to try to cure it

Sounds just like a heat problem.

The heat is mostly being generated by the CPU and GPU, not the display. It appears that HP is using some form of a duct system, to try and channel the heat off to the sides of the notebook. If that duct is blocked, or clogged up with dust, that could explain the heat problem.

There could be a few other things that might cause this as well, but since this only happens when you fire up a game, I really think its heat. Those things were never designed to be gaming beasts.

I used to work with a guy, who had an old laptop that would heat up.
He used a desk fan blowing directly on it's vents to cool it down.

It would be a quick way to find out if heat was definitely causing the issue.

I currently have a desktop fan on the left of it and a cooling pad under it. Should I just use a can of compressed air to clean it?

Most likely you will need to disassemble it to clean it properly. I have a very similar issue with my HP g6. It's sitting across the room waiting for me to have the time and inclination to clean it properly.
