Solved! Laptop's fans running even on idle

I recently got a laptop (Asus GL703 SCAR Edition, if that helps) and the fans run REALLY loud even when its idle and the thing I'm worried about is that the fans run like a jet engine even when it's just 40 degrees Celsius. So even when it's not getting hot the fans still start and it's starting to really bug people around me especially when I'm at school with this. Is there some sort of third party app that will let me control when the fans start like when it gets to 70 degrees then it runs but when its below it doesn't? Note: I have turned on passive cooling and it had no effect. Please help and thanks!

Check to see if there is anything running, even though it looks to be idle:

1) open task manager
2) go to "Performance" tab
3) click "Open Resource Monitor" at the bottom of the window
4) click the "CPU" column to sort by most usage first and see which processes are eating up cpu time

You should also see if it is the GPU. Download GPUz and run it. Look at the "Sensors" tab. If the GPU is idle, all those numbers and percentages should be low (GPU load, Power Consumption, the clocks, fan speed, etc.).

I should add, the thing to do first would be to clean the dust out with canned air if you haven't tried that already, but you did say it is relatively new. Worth a shot, anyway.

That's the thing my CPU is at like 40% after killing a lot of processes and the fans still run. I have installed Speed Fan but I'm not so sure what to do with because it won't show my fans.

You are saying your CPU is still at 40%. Resource monitor will show you which processes still remain running and how much CPU they are using. And, again, it could also be your GPU forcing the fan, so you need to check its activity with GPUz. Don't know how your laptop is built, but mine only has a single fan for both CPU and GPU so usage from either one could spin the fan faster.

I should also add, it could be that there is bad contact between the cpu and the heatsink inside. But, you still need to rule out active processes and you said you still have 40% cpu usage. Some processes are not seen in the task manager and you need to go into the Resource Monitor. I have found that things like windows update use a lot of CPU bandwidth while working in the background and that could be one potential source of this problem. You just have to approach this step by step and start ruling things out until you find the source of the problem.

Thanks that helped a bit but is their an app where I can specifically tell when the fans turn on besides Speed Fan because I think that only works on Desktops?
