On which modern Latin records? Are you going for a fairly harsh but
not blatty sound, like what seems to be popular on the Latin pop records?
Or are you going for somewhat recessed and smooth?
I have a real tendency to grab for the 77DX on trumpets and massed horns,
which gives a fairly recessed sound that doesn't interfere too much with
vocals. But it doesn't cut through a mix the way some of the newer pop
brass sounds... some of the new cumbia stuff sounds like it was done with
a 414 it's so shrill.
I have recently seen folks using the SM-7 and paddling the treble boost
switch on it up. I don't like that sound either, but it's not as harsh
as the 414 and it seems to make things more blatty too. For the most part
I would avoid anything with a big presence peak if you have an arrangement
where the vocals and trumpet are up at the same time, but if you want to
bring the trumpet way forward and don't mind stepping on the vocals, the
presence boost may be just the ticket.
