Lenova T61 "fan error"

May Father's Lenova T61 has started coming up with the Fan Error screen and the fan is making a terrible sound.

Do I need to replace the entire Cooling Fan Heatsink Assembly if the Heating Pad is still good or can I just replace the fan itself?

Is there a Test I can do to find how much I need to replace?

First of all its "Lenovo", not "Lenova".

Fan failure just means there is too much dust in the system, or the fan motor has died. Please open the laptop and clean out the internals and then test if the fan is working or not. If the fan still does not work then, you will need to replace it.
