Lenovo T420 laptop - can I buy generic battery or only Lenovo battery recommended?

so I want to replace my now dying battery of Lenovo t420.
should I buy from Lenovo only or do generic companies also suffice?

I recommended you buy a new battery through Lenovo to be safe.

Some cheaper batteries from elsewhere can have several issues:

1) battery not recognised as it doesn't have the same internal circuitry as the original.

2) battery can overheat, and have even been known to catch fire in extreme cases.

3) Damage to laptop can occur.

With all those risks I think you'll agree it's not worth buying cheap as it could turn out to be much more expensive than buying the proper OEM battery in the first place.

That's my opinion, others may not agree but I know where I stand on the matter.
(Unless you have a cheap, old laptop you're not too bothered about if the battery damages it)
